Women Writers Day

Do you want to know more about Women Writers in Wales? Do you have a best-selling novel inside you but don’t know where to start?

The Women Writers Day could have the answer. This unique one-day event brings some of the biggest names in the Welsh book world together with new writers.

Organised by Academi, the Welsh national literature promotion agency, the day-long event at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, aims to encourage new talent from Wales. New authors will also be given the chance to have their work assessed by Honno literary editor, Caroline Oakley.

Academi Chair of the English Members Board, Catherine Merriman will launch The Women Writers Day which features talks from some of Wales’ best writers including celebrated author Tiffany Murray and international poet Pascale Petit, plus workshops from Nia Wyn, Lorraine Jenkin, Anita Flowers, Louise Medus and Maureen Vincent-Northam.

Visitors can also learn how to turn their short stories into money-spinners, pen successful poetry, explore writing in the community and create inspiring fiction.

Time and Date

If you've planned on setting your novel in the past, here's a website from timeanddate.com that could prove invaluable to you as it allows you to call up a calendar for any year.

You can also calculate the distance between any places in the world. I just discovered that from Bristol to Sunderland it's 392 kilometers or 244 miles or 212 nautical miles (should there be major flooding at the time).

Other fun stuff includes working out just when you'll be 1 billion seconds old.

Another fab ABC review

This review of The Writer's ABC Checklist comes from Wendy Hughes via the The Woman Writer (the journal of the Women Writers and Journalists Society).

"This is one book that should be on every writer's bookshelf. Sue Kendrick, editor of WriteLink, sums it up describing it as 'a great writers' bible.' Even the most professional of writers will find something of value within its pages. Subjects such as accrediting sources, consistency, e-books, editors, who they are and what they do, to hooks, indexing, keeping records, markets, photography, and slush piles are all covered in succulent writing. I wish this book had been available when I started out as a writer, I would have saved myself endless searching. The A-Z format makes it easy to find exactly what you need to know, and by browsing you will find the answer to several questions you didn't realise you needed to ask! It is a book that should be read from cover to cover before being placed on a prominent shelf, then taken down and dipped into often. I will certainly be recommending it to writers in future."

Didn't I say it was fab?
